Course Aims

  • To give an in-depth exploration of counselling skills and theories
  • To explore and develop understanding of different counselling modalities, including Humanistic philosophy, CBT and Psychodynamic
  • To develop student understanding of grief, risk, power and the therapeutic relationship
  • To explore difference and diversity including gender, sexuality, ethnicity and disability
  • To develop awareness and understanding of professional issues, including professional associations, ethics and the law, working ethically online, NICE guidelines and IAPT
  • To develop and improve own learning with a study skills module, including academic referencing and writing, process journal writing and portfolio construction

Duration

  • 26 weeks

*168 guided learning hours (including self-study)

Assessment

This is a vocational course, therefore a minimum of 80% attendance is expected and contributes towards a pass mark and a portfolio submission consisting of:

  • 4 written assignments (one of which can be a video, PowerPoint presentation or an essay)
  • Process journal – to be recorded on a weekly basis throughout the course

Progression Routes

  • Level 4 – Providers who accept Level 3 in Counselling or equivalent (usually subject to application and interview) *some may require an accredited course

SCPTI – Scarborough Counselling & Psychotherapy Training Institute – UKCP accredited (various)

Grimsby Institute – Foundation Diploma Award followed by Degree level

These learning providers welcome applicants from Focus Counselling *subject to application and interview *correct as at November 2022

Cost

  • £650

*Payment plan available – £150 deposit to secure your place followed by 5 monthly payments of £100

Entry Requirements

  • Level 2 certificate/award in Counselling – copy of certificate to be provided (unless completed with Focus – evidence will already be on file)
